How does this system work?
FLEXI-DISC® Tubular Cable Conveyors, also referred to as disc or drag conveyors, gently move delicate bulk materials through polished stainless steel tubing using polymer discs mounted on a stainless steel cable. One end of the system features a drive wheel that propels the discs and cable, while a tensioning wheel at the opposite end maintains proper cable tension.
This flexible system supports multiple inlet and outlet points and allows tubing to be routed in horizontal, vertical, or angled configurations—even through tight spaces like wall or ceiling openings. Thanks to its modular construction, components such as inlets, outlets, and tube segments can be easily reconfigured, extended, shortened, or rerouted as process needs evolve.

Material Inlets
These modular inlets can be added anywhere along the conveyor circuit and are designed to gently feed fragile materials with minimal breakage.
Each inlet includes a clear window for easy visual checks on product flow and fill level.

Automatic Cable Tensioner - The system maintains optimal cable tension with a precision-engineered tensioning wheel. Available in two models:
- Manual: Uses spring-loaded adjustment for reliable tension control.
- Motorized: Automatically adapts to changing load conditions for optimal cable life and reduced maintenance.
A transparent cover allows quick visual inspection of internal components and real-time confirmation of operation.
Cable-Disc Assembly - The FLEXI-DISC cable-disc system is engineered for smooth, gentle conveying and efficient performance:
- Low-friction polymer discs glide through stainless steel tubes.
- Designed to handle tight turns and minimize material degradation.
- Multiple disc styles available for different product types
Drive sprockets use patented replaceable tips that reduce maintenance costs and downtime by allowing tip replacement without removing the full sprocket. These tips extend cable life and include wear indicators. Optional air knives can be installed to remove residual material from discs.
Cable and Tubing
Cables are made from stainless steel, with optional polymer coating for added durability.
Tubing (straight and elbow sections) comes in 304 or 316 stainless steel and includes optional clear sections for performance visibility.
Finishes can meet industrial or sanitary standards.
Drive System
The drive wheel rotates the cable-disc assembly at low, controlled speeds.
The housing can be extended to reduce cable wear and includes optional discharge cones for flexibility in outlet placement.
Patented sprocket tips on drive wheels reduce wear and offer easy maintenance access.
Optional air knives help clean the system during operation.
Inline Tubular Discharge Valves
These pneumatically operated discharge valves allow material to exit dust-free at intermediate points.
The U-shaped trough rotates to either fully discharge product or allow it to pass through to another location.
Air jets assist with clean, complete discharge.
Inline Full-Flow Discharge
Designed without valves or actuators, these outlets offer unrestricted, continuous discharge at the end of the conveyor.
Air knives can be added to remove material from the cable and discs efficiently.

BENEFITS OF TUBULAR CABLE CONVEYOR SYSTEMS – Why These are used instead of other Convey Methods
Performance
Tubular cable conveyors are purpose-built to address complex bulk material handling challenges that other systems may struggle with.
- They gently handle fragile materials—even mixtures with diverse particle sizes, shapes, and densities—without separating blended components.
- The enclosed system protects materials from contamination while also retaining their original temperature and moisture content.
- Complete material evacuation helps minimize waste, reduce residue buildup, and allows for quick, thorough cleaning.
- Components are constructed of stainless steel and finished to meet industrial, food-grade, or pharmaceutical-level cleanliness requirements.
Design Flexibility
These conveyors are highly adaptable and suited to dynamic plant environments.
- They can efficiently transfer materials from one or multiple intake points to one or multiple discharge locations—ideal for integration with packaging lines.
- Thanks to their modular design, the system layout can be easily adjusted—reconfigured in length, rerouted, or fitted with added or relocated inlets and outlets to match evolving production needs.
Productivity Benefits
Tubular cable conveyors are engineered to optimize process flow and operational efficiency.
- They require minimal power relative to the amount of material they move.
- Because they operate without the need for air pressure, there’s no requirement for blowers or filtration systems, reducing energy and maintenance demands.
- Their ability to fully evacuate materials supports faster product changeovers, cleaner operation, and less downtime.

Where Can These Tubular Cable Conveyors Be Used?
Bag Dump Stations
Tubular cable conveyors are ideal for transporting material over short or long distances from manual bag dump stations, offering a clean and efficient transfer process.
Bulk Bag Dischargers
These systems are well-suited for handling fragile or large-sized bulk materials discharged from bulk bags, ensuring gentle and reliable conveying.
Drum, Box & Container Dumpers
When unloading material from drums, boxes, or Gaylords, tubular cable conveyors provide a smooth and careful transfer, particularly effective for sensitive or irregularly shaped particles.
Feeding Packaging Lines
These conveyors are excellent for delivering materials directly to packaging lines while preserving the quality and structure of delicate products.
Integration with Roasting Equipment
FLEXI-DISC conveyors are commonly used to feed and remove materials such as coffee beans, nuts, or seeds to and from roasting equipment without causing product damage.
Sanitary Systems
Designed for hygienic applications, these enclosed systems prevent contamination and, at the end of each cycle, the discs sweep the tubing clean—minimizing waste and simplifying cleanup for fast turnaround.
Pet Food or Snack Production Lines
Deliver finished or semi-finished goods (e.g., kibble, coated snacks) to packaging or secondary processes without crushing or damage.
Pharmaceutical Applications
Safely convey capsules, tablets, or powder blends while maintaining cleanliness and minimizing degradation.

Featured Case Study: Quality Pasta
Brittle Pasta Handled Gently, Automatically with Box Dumpers, Tubular Cable Conveyors
CHARLEROI, PA — Quality Pasta Company upgraded its packaging operations by installing Flexicon’s tubular cable conveyors (TCCs) and box dumpers to handle fragile pasta efficiently, minimizing breakage to under 1% and keeping dust out of the packaging area.
Pasta arrives in Gaylord containers and is automatically dumped into vibratory feeders, which meter it into three Flexi-Disc® TCC circuits. The enclosed TCCs gently transport the pasta through stainless steel tubing to packaging lines via S-shaped routes, preserving product integrity and cleanliness. Transparent viewing sections and PLC-controlled alerts help monitor flow and hopper levels.
Two dumpers serve three lines, saving floor space, with one dedicated to fragile cup pasta. Changeovers take only 15–20 minutes due to easy cleaning, supporting daily product switches.
The company also uses a portable flexible screw conveyor for powdered cheese handling. Its spiral design prevents buildup and enables thorough sanitation, including kosher cleaning.
With this setup, Quality Pasta efficiently packages multiple pasta products while maintaining high quality standards and reducing labor and product damage.
